Nine ways to write

A project that speaks your genre’s language.

Pick a project type: Bokmo sets up the right template, the right vocabulary and the right layout. A screenplay opens on INT. PLACE — DAY, a novel on “Chapter 1”, and in a diary, characters become people.

The editor

Markdown, without giving it a thought.

Headings, bold, italic, lists: formatting appears as you type, with no preview mode. The text stays centred at a comfortable reading width, and focus mode fades everything but the sentence you are writing.

  • Full screen, to keep nothing but the page
  • Screenplay and play layout, live
  • Type @ to call up a character from the bible
  • Wiki-links between chapters, entries and notes
Bokmo on Mac: a screenplay sequence in standard layout, with scene headings, characters and dialogue, below the help that explains how it formats itself.

The project bible

No more grey eyes in chapter 1 and green ones in chapter 12.

Characters, places, entities, objects: each entry keeps what you need to know. Saved names are coloured in the text, the spell checker stops underlining the names you invented, and a right-click on a new name creates its entry.

  • Custom sections of entries, with their own fields
  • Recurring names with no entry yet, spotted for you
  • Who meets whom, and how many sheets each one appears in
Bokmo on Mac: the entry for the character Élise Marec, a protagonist present in 6 sheets, with the forms of her name, her relationships, her appearance, her psychology and her story arc.

Timeline and structure

Your story’s time, in plain sight.

Place your events on a timeline that zooms from years to hours, with durations, milestones and cause-and-effect links. The places in your bible become the lanes of the timeline, and your characters become metro lines that cross.

  • 17 narrative structures, from the Hero’s Journey to Kishōtenketsu
  • The book’s composition: parts, chapters and events by drag and drop
  • A free, dated or invented calendar: year 1, year 2…
Bokmo on Mac: the timeline of The Lighthouse in the Mist. Events sit on a dated timeline, arranged in lanes by place and connected by cause-and-effect arrows.

Poetry and song

The shape of a poem, the structure of a song.

The Styles menu sets up a fixed form, from the sonnet to the villanelle, or a song with its verses, choruses and bridges. And if you write in French, Bokmo goes further: rhymes ranked by richness, synonyms, Fusion to find the word that means the same and rhymes with yours, and on Mac, syllables counted in the margin, all offline.

  • Templates for fixed forms: sonnet, ballade, villanelle…
  • Verses, choruses and bridges for songwriters
  • In French, a syllable counter that knows the mute e, elision and diaeresis
Bokmo on Mac, in French: a sonnet in alexandrines in the editor, with the syllable count of each line shown in the margin.

Your writing belongs to you

No account. No server. No data collection.

Plain files

Your writing is Markdown files in a folder: readable by any software, today and twenty years from now.

Your iCloud

Your library travels from Mac to iPhone and iPad through your own iCloud Drive, without going through a Bokmo server.

Encrypted projects

Lock a project with a password, Face ID or Touch ID: its contents are genuinely encrypted on disk.

On-device intelligence

Summaries, tips and entry suggestions run on Apple’s language model, on the device and offline.

All the way to the end

Everything you need to finish.

Version history

A snapshot at every ⌘S, and others taken automatically if you like. Compare, restore.

Goals and streaks

Words today, writing days in a row, a fifteen-week activity calendar, a goal and a deadline for each text.

Annotations

Highlights in six colours and comments in the margin, which follow the text as you rewrite it.

Links between texts

Connect chapters, entries and notes with wiki-links, and see at a glance what points where.

Open Quickly

Type three letters: Bokmo finds the sheet, in titles as well as in the text.

Complete backups

An archive of the whole project, entries and events included, and a restore that shows how far along it is.
